THE MAN WHO STOLE BANKSY
Taking its cue from a few real cases or artwork being sold unbeknownst to its authors, The Man who stole Banksy addresses topical issues related to the recent rise of the speculation on street-art works, tackling a variety of issues such as copyright, the confrontation between different cultures in a post-colonial context, the recovery of frescoes by restorers specialized in the ‘strappo’ technique and the technological challenges it poses.
The docufilm shifts between real-life footage taken on the streets of several countries and interviews featuring art experts, journalists, professors, art curators and lawyers, next to key figures of the street-parallel art market.
Furthermore, for the first time The man Who Stole Banksy offers Walid “the beast” the chance to explain himself and his decision to saw off and sell the artwork painted by Banksy over the walls and given to the Palestinian people by the artist.
Throughout the movie the audience is challenged with the uncomfortable freedom to decide for themselves where the right and the wrong lie, for in this case it might well be, as often is, a matter of perspective.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Prof. Andrea Baldini author of A Philosophy Guide to Street Art and the Law (Brill edition, 2018).
Andrea Baldini is Associate Professor of Art Theory and Aesthetics at the School of Arts of Nanjing University and Director of the NJU Center for Sino-Italian Cultural Studies. He is also Young Ambassador of the Jiangsu Province.
