Righteousness above Family Loyalty should be Encouraged?

The 143^rd Session of English Saloon in Riverside English Society

The Duke of She informed Confucius, saying, "Among us here there are those who may be styled upright in their conduct. If their father has stolen a sheep, they will bear witness to the fact." Confucius said, "Among us, in our part of the country, those who are upright are different from this. The father conceals the misconduct of the son, and the son conceals the misconduct of the father. Uprightness is to be found in this."

An individual in the society is liable to be taught, educated and cultivated to shape a mindset that agrees with the main thought under the overwhelming traditional and orthodox ideology. In his mind, he already held a true and unanimous belief and was determined to make every effort to defend such faith. However, as his beloved parents or other relatives behaved against his belief, what should he do? Should he betray his faith by concealing his father's facts or report it to the authority by defending the belief? In the above story, Confucius already gave us an answer. Do you agree with it or not?

To defend or maintain mainstream ideology or rules, he may be honoured as a hero for his brave act of reporting his father.

In the family bond and esthetics, he must be denounced as an outrageous son.
