Why do you think the way you think? Why do you react the way you react? Why will you look at a picture and come to a totally different conclusion about what it depicts than somebody else? Here's an even bigger question: are your thoughts really your thoughts?
We all have unconscious biases. They come from our parents, our schools, our societies, and our media. Do they come from anywhere else? Are they helping us? Hurting us? Limiting us? Well, one thing we know, is that they are among the most common shortcuts to critical thinking. They serve as judgments that replace rational thought. How do they differ amongst cultures, generations, and socio-economic groups? How can we identify them when they happen? How can we see when others are using them? And, how can we stop them from being an obstacle in our quest to live the lives we actually want to live?
