The saying goes: “Times pass quickly around the clock, and life is hard and short”. Looking back on the bittersweet days reflects our success, regrets and inspirations. Although we have taken it for granted and rarely intended to recall the past ego, we understand such review is worth studying because it is “History”— an umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of these events (Wikipedia). The significance of historical figures has been a debatable subject among philosophers who think they play a crucial role in the historical progression or have little impact on social change. Hegel thought a worldwide historical figure should pose a challenge or resolve a historical conflict, such as Julius Caesar, who appeared on a stage when Roman turned into an empire from a republic.

The Scottish philosopher and evolutionist Herbert Spencer felt historical figures were unimportant. That which constitutes history, properly so called, is in great part omitted from works on the subject. In his essay What Knowledge Is of Most Worth? he wrote: “Only of late years have historians commenced giving us, in any considerable quantity, the truly valuable information. As in past ages the king was everything and the people nothing; So, in past histories, the doings of the king fill the entire picture, to which the national life forms but an obscure background. While only now, when the welfare of nations rather than of rulers is becoming the dominant idea, are historians beginning to occupy themselves with the phenomena of social progress. The thing it really concerns us to know is the natural history of society “(Wikipedia).
