Resignation—a kind of Beauty?

The 144^th Session of English Saloon in Riverside English Society

“As Heaven changes through movement; a gentleman makes unremitting efforts to perfect himself”. The traditional Chinese culture is labelled as an enterprising and ambitious thought under the prolonged influence of Confucianism, which is also regarded as a core force in sustaining continuous Chinese development for thousands of years.

However, we can find another controversial side of Chinese culture in some proverbs, such as “Better bend than break”, or “A great man knows when to yield and when not.” In some famous historical stories, the same discrepancy occurred in “The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains” and “The Travel of The Peach Blossom Garden”. The first is designed to advocate persistence that never shrinks back in the face of challenge, but the second champions how wise to retire in the competition. 

Nothing is more fatiguing nor, in the long run, more exasperating than the daily effort to believe things, which daily become incredible. To be done with this effort is an indispensable condition of secure and lasting happiness. (Russel, 222. 1930)
