前言｜Preface

ART23荣幸推出荷兰艺术家Donald Schenkel及Jan Kuhlemeier的油画展览《The Calm 帕罗西汀》。「Calm」即平和、宁静，是本次展出的油画作品带给观众的直观感受。「帕罗西汀」是一种用于治疗抑郁症的药物，具有缓解焦虑、抑郁症状的功效，是对本次展览的英文名字「The Calm」的一种戏谑的翻译。

本次展出的油画作品以渐变的形式为主，渐变因其简单而迷人，也唤起了一种宁静的沉思感。在创作过程中，作者对材料的简单性和深度进行了探索，将古老的绘画原理转化为对颜料的极简主义应用。通过研究油和颜料的特性，作者把油画颜料微妙的色彩过渡发挥到了极致，来表达纯净与和平的感觉。在作品面前，观众能冥想放空，沉下心来，直面自我，这正是「The Calm」想带给大家的体验。

ART23 is proud to present the oil painting exhibition ‘The Calm 帕罗西汀’ by Dutch artists Donald Schenkel and Jan Kuhlemeier. ‘Calm’ means peace and tranquility. It is the intuitive experience that the oil paintings on display bring to the audience. ‘帕罗西汀’ is a medicine used to treat depression. It has the effect of relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is a playful translation of the English title ‘The Calm’ of this exhibition.

The presenting works are mainly in the form of gradation. The gradation fascinates in their simplicity, and also evokes an almost contemplative feeling of peace. In the artistic practice, the simplicity and depth of material is explored. The artist translates ancient principles from the art of painting to an almost minimalist use of materials. By studying the characteristics of oils and pigments, the artist takes the subtle color transitions of oil paints to the extreme, in order to express the feeling of purity and peace. Looking at the work, audience can try to release and meditate, live in the present, and observe their inner selves. This is the experience ‘The Calm’ wants to bring to the audience.

ART23 Contemporary Art Gallery maintains a resonance with the society. Exhibition ‘The Calm’ try to provide the audience with an opportunity for emotional communication. By looking at the exhibition, audience can relieve depression and anxiety, explore the dialogue between themselves and the soul, and find inner peace.

In Donald’s artistic practice, the simplicity and depth of material is explored. The subtle colour transitions of oil paint study the behaviour of the oils and pigments. Donald developed this painting technique to such a state of purity that it feels almost digital.

The gradients fascinate in their simplicity, but also evoke an almost contemplative feeling of peace. Different colour compositions and the translation Donald makes to paintings, sculptures and life-sized installations lead to a diverse portfolio, giving room to a wide range of experiences of colour, reflection, and feeling.

Fascinated by oil paint, Donald translates ancient principles from the art of painting to an almost minimalist use of materials. The behaviour of colours is determined by more than just their hue: every pigment blends differently, differs in transparency or radiance.Starting from these characteristics, Donald searches for connections with different materials, like glass, Perspex, or mirrors, which are similarly transparent.

In his most recent works, Donald paints gradients in wafer-thin layers on mirrors. These transparent layers let the light through, which is then reflected by the underlying mirror. The colours appear to light up, and reflect the fragmented silhouette of the observer viewing the work.
