French tenor Jo Cadilhon and Chinese pianist Cheng Tong will present a recital of French Romantic and early 20th century music from Berlioz, Fauré, Duparc and Debussy.
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) composed his cycle “The Summer Nights” around 1840 based on six poems by French Romantic poet Théophile Gautier (1811-1872). This work is often considered the first model of French melodies, where a composer writes new music on the text of an already published poem. This setting of words on music will continue to inspire French composers throughout the 19th and 20th century.Berlioz(1803-1869)柏辽兹,《夏日之夜》这套作品是根据法国浪漫主义诗人Gautier(1811-1872)创作于1840年的六首诗歌编曲而成。 The poems chosen by Berlioz for his “Summer Nights” do not really talk about summer. However, the music he composed for these melodies perfectly captures the variety of our activities during this period of the year: night-long parties, love stories, longing for departed spring and lovers, impressions from dreams and nightmares. If the cycle starts and ends with cheerful pieces, the four central melodies paint a rather oppressive impression populated by lost lovers and ghosts. For the second half of the recital, we will mirror Berlioz’ “Summer Nights” with six other melodies conveying similar atmospheres by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) and Henri Duparc (1848-1933). These two French composers crafted several melodies on poems they carefully selected from Romantic and contemporary authors. Texts by Théophile Gautier feature prominently once again in this made-up cycle. Two of the melodies in this second “Summer Nights” even use exactly the same poems chosen by Berlioz in his earlier cycle of songs.到了下半场,我们将仿制Faure(1845-1924)福雷的”夏日之夜“和Duprac(1848-1933),使用六种类似的场景。 Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) composed several melodies on poems he carefully selected from contemporary authors. The three melodies chosen for this programme are early compositions (1861-1875) that are in the direct stylistic heritage of Berlioz’ cycle of songs.

Jo Cadilhon started playing piano as a child and passed ABRSM Grade 8. He has also been singing continuously for the past 25 years as a tenor in vocal ensembles and choirs of various sizes in all the countries where his work as an agricultural economist has led him. Starting from 2010, he has taken regular private lessons with experienced voice teachers (soprano Mary Saint-Palais from the Conservatoire Rueil-Malmaison, barytone Michel Philippe who sang at Paris Opera from 1972 to 1991, tenor Gorka Robles-Alegria). They have all helped him improve his vocal technique. Jo has especially tasked them to teach him the art of pronouncing and singing French to make the all-important words intelligible.
