Seeing ‘Him’ is a mixed media exhibition in which eight female artists set out on a journey to deconstruct, redefine and challenge socially created traits associated with the word ‘masculinity’. Rather than accepting it as an innate, passive condition, the contributing artists explore manhood beyond the binary, contemplating its role and manifestation in the contemporary society, unveiling and welcoming its fragility and vulnerability. As a result, the audience is invited to think outside the box and reflect on whether masculinity lives in the body or the mind, and to further conceptualize the topic in their own everyday lives.

Jo Rankine is an Australian freelance photographer based in Shanghai that has spent the past 26 years working with film and digital imaging. She studied film and alternative photography processes in high school and university and holds a diploma of digital imaging. Jo worked as a photography educator for eleven years at the technical college in Australia and in recent years she has begun to explore the quiet corners of life, spaces often overlooked. She now combines photography with projection, painting and alternative printing techniques. I’m using this technique to explore aggression, fragility and beliefs. Each cyanotype is unique, even when the same negative is used, much like people. There is always a variation. Sometimes the variation is obvious. Sometimes not so much.
Yolanda vom Hagen studied photo design in Germany and at the Beijing Film Academy. Since 2010 she has been working as commercial photographer in Shanghai. Her art work aligns closely to her own life journey. From documenting the environment of people it shifted in 2015 to reflect on them, creating spaces of connection to reveal insights into her own and her subjects’ lives, challenges and emotional landscapes. In 2016 Yolanda started using photography as a tool to detach herself from traditional convictions: Her series “Life in Memory” and her first videographic works “OffLine” (2018) and “Essence of You” (2019) depict the topic of loss and death. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions. Her work is displayed at the Collection of the Department of Contemporary Art at the Ruhr Museum Essen, Germany. Yolanda was in 2019 the first foreign nominee of the Hou Dengke Documentary Photographic Award. Growing up with a single, divorced father evoked empathy for the struggles of the working class man in me. My father lives in constant torment between his own needs and the responsibilities that he and his environment puts on him as a man. He raised me to be equally fiercely independent, practical, and capable as a man. While growing up, I often found myself confronted with women that deny their role in gender dynamics, victimize themselves, or simply hand over all responsibility to others. In my video work, I explore the beliefs in men and women about the struggles of being a man and the capacities and experiences of vulnerability of men. My objective is to support more understanding and connection for the dynamics between women and men. 装置 Installation:"A Real Man" “一个真实的男人...” In my research, I asked men and women from all over the world to share objects that represent a real man/manhood to them. I collected these objects, creating this interactive photobooth. Participants are invited to select three objects they consider to be most representive of manhood. They further pick cards, that show the qualities they connect to their chosen objects. Participants can pose with their chosen objects. The pictures will become art pieces. The goal of this interactive photo booth “A REAL MAN” is to engage and evoke awareness about what contemporary society thinks of manhood by letting visitors reflect, choose, and share. This installation is dedicated to participants that want to let go of limiting beliefs, experiences, negative energies and stories. You are invited to write down your beliefs, emotions and experiences that are holding you back from fully expressing who you are and where you should BE in this world. After having written down your throughts, fold the letter and throw it into the muted bonfire. Say goodbye to what no longer serves you. With a little shovel of sand you will bury it symbolically. At the end of this exhibition, we will perform a ceremony that cuts and transitions these energies and free us from limiting human concepts, emotions and experiences. Create new space for love.

In China, she has directed a quantity of drama series, documentaries, as well as food, music and creative work under commercial themes. Her personal work reflects inner struggles and beliefs, exploration of identity, ambiguity of categories and borders, perspectives on nature and human activities such as hermitage. Her first short film on the theme of Post-War Trauma was winner of Roma Cinema DOC awards in 2017. With help of model Li Zhuan, the intimate portrait of this androgynous female and the painting of Peking Operatic warrior characters Daomadan creates their clash and integration. Daomadan - female armed with sword and horse -are female characters who are believed as powerful as generals in war, but sing and dance much more than fighting on stage, compared to their male equivalent. Female in a traditionally more masculine profession or who simply look more masculine may face much more subtle conditions in reality. The video piece deconstruct the creation of Daomadan. What does being female mean, what does masculinity feel like, and where should a masculine female fit in social-cultural discourses? How much are all women/men recognizing the roles assigned by their gender?
Andrea Martínez 西班牙 Andrea Martínez Figueiredo, Spanish photographer, born in Montevideo (Uruguay) Art lover (specially around paintings and photography. She holds a Master’s degree in Artistic Photography (Node Center), and she has followed several technical classes (light management and personal project) in “Escuela La Maquina”(Madrid). She has been working on portraits lifestyle photography and on her own artistic projects. I explore how contemporary society changes the way masculinity is seen among people. I show women who adopt different masculine behavior in order to show stronger character, being less submissive and more in control of their lives. And in contrast, I also show men who are not afraid to show emotions, willing to risk the possibility of ruining the image of the “strong man” prevailing mostly among older generation. Alexandra Babonneau is a French photographer with an eclectic body of work. Besides her own artistic projects, she has more that 20 years of professional experience in beauty and fashion photography. This prolific photographer, who began her career working with analog photography, found in 2008, her artistic path by experimenting with overprinting, a photo technique that allowed her to create the transition from film to digital photography. Her artistic career began in Madagascar with a humanitarian project in 2011 called "the food chain" which witnessed the country's precarity of a basic need of child nutrition. With her personal projects, Alexandra tries to denounce and/or express essential human topics such as malnutrition, women's equality or respect of nature. She exhibited for the first time in 2013 in Casablanca, Morocco, then several exhibitions followed in Paris including a permanent exhibition at the City of Luc Besson Cinema. When I was young, I had only a negative image of men. I was afraid. This fear accompanied me for many years until I began to reconcile with my father, and met an incredibly kind man who is now my husband. Even though equality of the sexes has not been reached, and women are still underrepresented in government and decision making roles, and oppression is very real for many women across the globe, I want to show men who are capable of being vulnerable despite their apparent manly strength. In most societies men must be portrayed strong and without weakness, for that reason, with this project, I want to express their fragility that for the most part is suppressed. Flowers will be my inspiration to depict masculine fragility, with them, I want to show the complimentary to the strength and virility of men. I will use overprint technic in order to disturb and challenge the viewer’s reading(s). Nora Lai uses different media - pencil and camera, Photoshop and meditation, to better understand herself and her relationship with the outside world. She studied Design and Visual Communication in her home country Italy. Her work experience has developed through a path made of design, fashion and art. She has been working for several years as jewelry designer and design educator, along with carrying out different kind of artistic projects. Photography teaches her that people can not change reality but can always chose how to see it, what to take from it and what to focus on. Fai l’uomo! - In her project she explores the roles that the idea of masculinity creates. Men are always asked to wear roles that someone else or even themselves create in order to match the expectation that society has set for them. Being strong, successful, earning money, supporting a family, these are only a few of the most common stereotypes that came to her mind when starting to reflect on the idea of masculinity. With her project, Nora Lai, wants to demonstrate that this idea of being a man actually doesn’t exist. It’s a construction. What society expects to see in men and what a man has to create for himself. "Fai l’uomo!" Ioana is a photographer and producer born in Romania. Specialising mostly in portraiture and commercial photography, the approach to the visual work she creates is very much contemporary but also analog inspired. She loves the creative process and bringing out different sides in the people she photographs. 上图:新男 新男 is an ongoing portrait series exploring new facets of Asian masculinity. Intrigued by how society interacts through what people wear, how they communicate, the music they listen to, Ioana began documenting local subcultures, creating a window into the liminal space existing between fashion, youth and identity, that future generations can look back on. The revealing portraits, captured on medium format film, feature young men mostly photographed in a public setting. The series aims to put forward an honest reflection on race, culture and identity and how they have shaped the aesthetic manifestation of the contemporary Asian male.
Katya V. Kars is a creative producer with a love for arts and a BA in Theatre and Cinema Arts from The Kyiv National Theatre, Cinema and Television University. During her decade-long stay in China she has produced various video projects as well as the award winning animated short film “The Fly”. Her work has always aspired to deliver a strong message through almost childlike execution. With help of Shanghai based photographer Mandy Cai in this project I want to explore masculinity as something that could be played with as the very definition of the word is something rather vague and extremely subjective. Having a strong background in performing arts I couldn’t have thought of a better way of expressing it, but with the contemporary scene of a drag community in Shanghai on a lenticular print, a fun execution that reminds us of our inner children. Displaying how drag performers morph with their stage identities, visually enhance or tone down masculine aspect of their characters I aim to inspire people to push the boundaries of their own self-perception by toying with the gender-based polarization.
