躲雨的故事 

Finding a shelter in the rain

傍晚时分，一位和尚正在返寺途中，突然下起了倾盆大雨。雨势滂沱，和尚此时身处荒郊野外，急需躲雨的地方。他看到在前方不远处有一座庄园，于是赶紧前去叩门求宿一夜，暂避风雨。

In the evening, a monk was on his way back to his temple. Suddenly, it started raining heavily. The monk was in the middle of nowhere and he urgently needed shelter. He looked around and saw a manor from a distance, so he rushed there hoping its owners could allow him to stay over.

一位仆人来打开大门，问明来意后，冷冷地回答说：“我家老爷向来和僧道无缘，不跟出家人打交道，请你马上离开吧！”

He knocked on the front door. A servant came to answer. After hearing the monk's request, he responded coldly, "Our master has never been close to monks. Please leave now!"

“外头雨这么大，附近又没有其他的店面住家，还是麻烦您行行好，给个方便，好吗？”和尚再三恳求。

"Sir, it's raining so heavily and there are no hotels nearby. Please could you just kindly help me?" The monk begged. 

“容我入内请示老爷的意思。你且在外等候！”说完，仆人返身入内，不一会儿出来表示，主人不肯答应。和尚只好请求仆人同意让他躲在屋檐下躲雨，明早再走。没想到仆人依旧摇头拒绝，挥手示意和尚离开。

"Let me go ask my master. Just stay there and wait." The servant went back inside. After a short while, he came back and informed the monk of his master’s refusal. The monk then begged to temporarily stay under the eave and leave the next morning. However, the servant still refused his request, waving to send him away. 

和尚想不出其他办法，当下向仆人问明了庄园主人的姓名，然后无奈地冲进大雨中，全身湿淋淋地奔回了寺庙。

The monk could do nothing but leave. He asked the name of the manor’s owner and then rushed into the rain and arrived at the temple soaking wet. 

三年后，庄园老爷纳了个小妾，对她宠爱有加。一天小妾忽然想到附近庙里上香祈福，老爷闻言，吩咐仆人备好车马，决定陪她一块出门。

Three years later, the manor owner married a concubine who he very much adored. One day, she wanted to visit the temple nearby to pray for blessings. Hearing that, the manor owner ordered the servants to prepare a cart for them to visit the temple together. 

到了庙里，小妾上香礼佛，老爷则好奇地到处逛逛，忽然瞥见在大殿佛龛有一块显眼的长生禄位牌上，很醒目的写着自己的大名，心中既惊奇又纳闷，不明白究竟是怎么一回事，因为自己从未来过寺庙。

Upon arrival, the concubine went to light incense and bow to the Buddha statue. While waiting, the manor owner wandered around in the temple. Suddenly, he saw a spirit tablet with his name on it. He was surprised and puzzled because he had never been to this temple before. 

他想找人询问，看到一个正在长廊打扫的小沙弥，于是忙上前请教这是怎么回事。

He wanted to find out why, and he saw a young monk sweeping the floor in the corridor so he hurried forward to ask him. 

小沙弥笑了笑，回答说：“这是我们住持三年前写的，有一天他从外头淋着大雨回来，说有位施主和他宿世没有善缘，所以特别为他立了一块长生禄位。住持天天诵经念佛，一定回向功德给他，若是寺里有法会更不忘回向，希望能和那位施主化解冤结、加添善缘。至于当天到底发生啥事，其中的来龙去脉，就非我们所能知晓了……”

The young monk smiled and said, “This was written by our abbot three years ago. One day he returned from a trip while it was raining heavily. He told us that he had encountered a person with whom he must have had no positive karmic connection, so he created a spirit tablet for him. Since then, our abbot has been reading sutras to him, wishing to pass merits to him so as to improve their karmic relationship. Abbot didn’t tell us much about what had actually happened though.” 

庄园主人听了这番话，心中有谱，当下感到既惭愧又不安。回家后他思前想后，决心改变。从此以后，他成了这座寺庙的大施主，平日虔诚供养，遇有法会、讲经等活动，更是鼎力相助，成了乡里称颂的大善人、功德主。

Hearing that, the manor owner knew that the person in the story was exactly himself. He felt ashamed and anxious. After he got home, he decided to change. Ever since then, he gradually became a big offering contributor to the temple, proactively supported all events, and became famous in the village for his kindness and merits.
